Working in Canada as a general contractor, one question comes up more than any other:

“Do I really need a P.Eng? How did you get yours?”

Honestly, I had no idea where to start. I wasn’t sure how much of my experience from Korea would be recognized in Canada, and there were moments I almost gave up — worried that my background wouldn’t meet the requirements.

But in February 2026, I finally got my P.Eng.

This is a step-by-step account of my real experience — from applying as an EIT in 2023 to receiving my final license. I hope it helps anyone going through the same process.

What Is P.Eng? How It Differs from Korean Qualifications

Many Korean engineers compare P.Eng to Korea’s ‘Technician License (기술사)’, but they are fundamentally different.

Key AuthorityTechnical review & supervisionDesign stamping, legal responsibility

P.Eng is not just a certificate. It is a license that allows you to independently sign off on designs (stamping) and take legal responsibility for your work. If you want to stand on equal footing with Canadian-trained engineers, it’s essential.

Step 1: Education Assessment — WES and the Washington Accord (2023)

How to Get Your Credentials Assessed Through WES

The first hurdle was credential recognition. I had my Korean university degree assessed through WES (World Education Services) and applied for my EIT (Engineer-in-Training) in 2023.

Step-by-step process:

  1. Request official English transcripts and graduation certificate from your Korean university
  2. Send documents to the engineering association through WES
  3. Always check the “delivery confirmation” option — after sending, contact the association directly to confirm receipt
  4. Allow approximately 1.5 months for review

💡 Key tip: Canadian administration won’t move on its own. Make it a habit to follow up consistently — know exactly where your application stands at every stage.

Washington Accord — A Must-Check

Verify whether your degree falls under the Washington Accord accreditation track before you apply. This can significantly affect your process depending on whether it’s recognized or not.

Should You Apply as EIT First, or Go Straight to P.Eng?

Many people don’t know this, but you can apply directly for P.Eng without going through EIT first. Contact your provincial association to find out — it could save you the EIT application fee and annual membership costs.

Step 2: Experience Assessment — CBA (Competency Based Assessment)

What Is the CBA?

Instead of an exam, P.Eng requires 4 years of work experience + a CBA (Competency Based Assessment) to demonstrate your engineering competency. I went through this process with the Manitoba association (EGMB).

💡 Strategic tip: Even if you plan to move provinces later, it’s far more efficient to complete your P.Eng with the association where you registered as EIT first, then Transfer your license afterward.

The SAO Method — How to Write a Strong CBA

I documented my experience as a Project Coordinator (PC) at a General Contractor using this framework:

  • Situation: What was the context, and what was your scope of responsibility?
  • Action: How did you apply engineering knowledge, and who did you coordinate with?
  • Outcome: How did your judgment and decisions lead to a successful project result?

Don’t just list your work history. The key to passing is aligning your experience with the specific engineering competency indicators the association requires.

Step 3: NPPE — Professional Practice and Ethics Exam

What to Expect

Alongside the experience assessment, you must pass the NPPE (National Professional Practice Exam). It’s similar in style to the PMP exam — multiple choice questions asking what the most appropriate action would be in various scenarios as a licensed P.Eng.

How to Prepare Effectively

  • Purchase and repeatedly practice with official or third-party practice exams
  • Use dedicated NPPE preparation websites
  • Use AI tools like Claude to review and consolidate key concepts

Step 4: Final Approval — License Issued February 2026

Once your CBA review and NPPE are both complete, the association conducts a final check and issues your P.Eng license.

What I received upon approval:

  • 🔖 Engineer’s Seal
  • 📜 Certificate of Registration
  • 🎉 Official welcome as a General Member

Three years from my first EIT application in 2023. It wasn’t easy — but I now have the credentials to compete as an equal alongside Canadian-trained engineers.
