Tile is one of the most durable and water-resistant flooring options — but its reputation for being hard to install keeps many homeowners calling in professionals. With solid preparation and the right technique, a bathroom or kitchen tile job is very doable as a weekend DIY project.

Choosing the Right Tile
Floor Tile vs. Wall Tile
Floor tiles and wall tiles are not interchangeable. Floor tiles must have a Slip Resistance (PEI) rating:

- PEI Rating 4+: High-traffic areas
- Never use wall tile on floors — the surface is too slippery and the tile may crack under foot traffic.

The Most Important Prep: Substrate
Tile needs a solid, flat, stable base. Weak or flexible substrates cause grout to crack and tiles to pop loose.
Bathroom Floors
Never tile directly over plywood in a bathroom. Moisture will rot the wood and cause tiles to lift. Always install Cement Backer Board (CBU) or Hardibacker first, then tile over that.
Tiling Over Existing Tile
If the existing tile is firmly bonded, you can tile over it. Just account for the added height — check clearance under doors and transitions to adjacent flooring.
Flatness Check
If there’s more than 3mm (⅛″) variation over a 1.8m (6 ft) span, use self-leveling compound before tiling.
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Plan Your Layout — Dry Layout First
Before any adhesive goes down, do a dry layout — place tiles without mortar to see exactly how they’ll fit.
- Decide whether to start from the room center or from a wall
- Adjust your starting point so cut tiles at the edges are at least half a tile wide
- Plan for full tiles at the most visible entry point
Snap chalk lines to mark the horizontal and vertical centerlines of the room. These are your reference lines for the entire job.
Step 2: Apply Thin-set
Spread thin-set with your notched trowel, working in sections of about 60×60 cm (2×2 ft) at a time — don’t spread more than you can tile before it skins over.
- Hold the trowel at ~45° to create even ridges
- Comb ridges perpendicular to the tile placement direction to prevent trapped air pockets
Back-buttering: For tiles 12″×24″ or larger, also spread a thin layer of thin-set on the back of each tile before placing it. Skipping this causes hollow spots that crack under load.
Step 3: Place Tiles
- Press each tile firmly and tap with a rubber mallet to fully embed it
- Use spacers to maintain consistent joint width

Step 4: Make Your Cuts
- Straight cuts: Wet saw — feed slowly with water running.
- L-shaped cuts (corners): Two straight cuts on the wet saw.
- Circular cutouts (pipes, toilet flange): Angle grinder with a diamond blade, or a tile hole saw.
Step 5: Let It Cure
Wait at least 24 hours (ideally 48) before grouting. Walking on or grouting fresh tile will shift it out of position.
Step 6: Grout
- Remove all spacers
- Use a rubber grout float to press grout into joints at a 45° diagonal — this packs them fully
- After 15–20 minutes, wipe excess with a damp sponge. Use minimal water — too much dilutes the grout and weakens the joints.
- After 24 hours, buff off remaining grout haze with a dry cloth
Step 7: Seal the Grout
Once grout has fully cured (72+ hours), apply grout sealer. Grout is porous and will absorb water and stains without protection. This step is non-negotiable in bathrooms.
