When you register a vehicle in BC, ICBC Basic (Autoplan) is mandatory. But the moment you sit down with a broker and they ask “What else would you like to add?”, many drivers go blank. The options are numerous and the terminology can be confusing.

In this guide, we break down the structure of ICBC Basic coverage and the optional add-ons you can stack on top — either through ICBC directly or through private insurers like BCAA, Intact, and Wawanesa.

Understanding How BC Auto Insurance Works

BC auto insurance has two distinct layers.

Layer 1 — ICBC Basic (Autoplan Basic)
Mandatory for all BC-registered vehicles. You cannot register a vehicle without it.

Layer 2 — Optional / Extension
Coverage added on top of Basic. You can purchase optional coverage through ICBC or through private insurers who are licensed to offer optional auto insurance in BC.

What ICBC Basic Covers — and What It Doesn’t

What’s Included in Basic

CoverageDetails
Third Party Liability$200,000 minimum (bodily injury and property damage)
Accident BenefitsMedical expenses and income replacement for you and passengers
Underinsured Motorist ProtectionCovers you when the at-fault driver has insufficient insurance
Hit and Run / Uninsured MotoristProtection against hit-and-run and uninsured drivers

What Basic Does NOT Cover

  • Your own vehicle repair costs (in a single-vehicle accident where no other driver is at fault)
  • Collision coverage
  • Comprehensive coverage (theft, natural disasters, animal collisions, etc.)
  • Windshield repair or replacement
  • Extended Third Party Liability (above $200,000)

In short, if your own vehicle is damaged in most scenarios, Basic alone won’t protect you.

ICBC Optional Coverage — What to Add

1. Extended Third Party Liability (Strongly Recommended)

The $200,000 Basic limit can be inadequate in a serious accident. Legal costs and damages in major crashes can easily reach seven figures.

Recommended level: $1,000,000–$2,000,000
The additional annual premium is typically only $50–$150.

2. Collision Coverage

Covers your vehicle repair costs when you’re at fault (or partially at fault) in a collision.

  • Choose your deductible: commonly $300, $500, or $1,000
  • Higher deductible = lower premium
  • Essential for newer or higher-value vehicles; calculate the cost-benefit for older ones

3. Comprehensive Coverage

Covers damage other than collisions, including vehicle theft, fire, floods, hail and other weather events, animal collisions (deer strikes on BC highways are more common than you’d think), and windshield damage (see below).

Typical deductibles range from $100 to $500.

4. Windshield Coverage — Small Chip Repairs at No Cost

Stone chips on your windshield are a common occurrence on BC highways. With Comprehensive coverage, windshield chip repairs are covered at no charge — no deductible applies. If a full replacement is needed, your standard Comprehensive deductible applies (commonly $200).

Don’t ignore a chip — left unrepaired, it can spread into a full crack requiring a replacement that costs $400–$800.

Tip: Windshield shops like Safelite or Speedy Glass handle ICBC billing directly. In many cases you can walk in, get the chip repaired, and leave without paying anything.

ICBC vs. Private Insurers (BCAA, Intact, Wawanesa, etc.)

Private insurers in BC are licensed to offer optional auto insurance, giving drivers the choice to shop around for better rates on the coverage above Basic.

Recommended Coverage by Situation

SituationRecommended Coverage
New immigrant, used vehicleBasic + TPL $1M + Comprehensive ($300 deductible); Collision optional by vehicle value
New or financed/leased vehicleBasic + TPL $2M + Collision ($500 deductible) + Comprehensive ($200 deductible)
Older vehicle (10+ years, under $5,000 market value)Basic + TPL $1M + Comprehensive only (Collision often not cost-effective)

Summary

ICBC Basic is a starting point, not a complete solution. At a minimum, add Comprehensive coverage and extend your Third Party Liability to $1,000,000 or more. A single windshield chip repair — covered for free — can already justify the cost of Comprehensive on its own.

For Optional coverage, it’s worth comparing prices with private insurers to make sure you’re getting the best rate.
